Welcome water savings at your hospitality site – to cut running costs and reduce energy use – in 2025

Steps on saving water are delivering significant reductions in running costs, energy use – and carbon emissions – And, with the range of costs the hospitality sector faces, 2025 is the year to tap into these opportunities.
With wholesaler water rate increases from April 2025, there has never been a better time to remind yourself of the water efficiency actions that can reduce risks to your operation, so you keep your doors open – and find an area to reduce costs, to help the bottom line.
Emma Goodwin, a Commercial and Hospitality Account Manager, with UKHospitality Supplier member Water Plus, shares the important steps to take – and shows where businesses have seen big benefits from taking action.
Savings dished up
A site with a restaurant, cocktail bar and pub is expected to see a big saving of 1,056 litres, in estimated water use, a day – in 2025 – after a water audit onsite identified the small, low-cost water-saving actions that’d make the biggest impact. That’d fill more than 4,220 cups of tea/coffee a day!*
Another pub is also saving 107 litres of estimated water use, a day, from flush saving technology that’s been installed – showing the difference small actions can make.
Wholesaler rates, that are included in all business water bills, are for the cubic metre of water used (m3), where businesses have water meters.
So, saving a cubic metre of water a day (1,000 litres) quickly adds up to week, by week, cost savings going forward. And from April 2025, the payback time on any kit installed will be shorter in areas seeing wholesaler rate increases.
A 288 litres of water a day, estimated saving, has been identified in a water-saving visit at a pub, after leaks found, during this, were fixed. Another pub is expected to see 184 litres of water a day lower use, in 2025, after unnecessary water loss was stopped.
The savings were achieved after all these businesses responded to Water Plus contact around water efficiency opportunities.

What to look for: The water-saving menu choices
There are a host of actions that can be taken – though they needn’t cost the earth, nor take lots of time to do. Regular maintenance checks and spotting drips or leaks can be part of usual opening up checks – and at other times.
Tap aerators are low cost and are a great way to reduce flow rates – and cut the amount spent on water and energy used heating water.
Check all water-using equipment is working as they should – and are on the most efficient settings.
Note down a meter reading regularly – at least once a month, if not more often, if it’s safe to access. This doesn’t take long and can identify areas where your business can make an efficiency.
Engage customers in water-saving steps they can take, while at your venue – and speak to staff to gain ideas on water-saving actions and to raise awareness around making the most of water that’s used.
Water-saving can cut running costs, save energy, where less hot water’s used, or moved – and cut carbon emissions, as there are carbon emissions linked to all water used at hospitality sites. So water-saving is a win, win for your business – and for Net Zero Roadmaps in the industry. And getting started, if you haven’t already – is easy.
Dive into data to power more efficiencies
For those who want daily data updates – or whose water meter isn’t safe or easy to access – data loggers on water meters can be fitted, which provide updates throughout each day on an online portal, Water Plus can provide.
Alerts can be set for certain water use levels, and multiple logins can be provided to help tracking across bigger chains.
A number of hospitality businesses, including large hotel chains and another multi-site with food outlets, have added data loggers to gain better daily data on water use across their portfolio of national locations – and to help spot any water issues early. These have identified at least 12 locations with leaks, in the last year – with alerts through the Water Plus proactive water management team and the detailed data in the Water Plus data logger portal.
An owner of a busy hospitality business in Lancashire, explains the benefits they’re seeing from tracking water use too.
Chris Jones, Owner and Manager of the Beechwood Guesthouse, said:
Water is really important for our business, so we look at how it’s used throughout the year. We’ve been a customer with Water Plus since 2017 as they make it easy to manage our water information and account.
We are really pleased with the service we have received with Water Plus. Their team are always helpful and communication is swift. It’s really easy to provide meter readings for our water use, which we note every month as part of tracking our costs as a business.
The MyAccount online platform, that Water Plus provides, is really easy to use. It’s really quick to submit the meter reading each time.
