Serving Britain: how hospitality creates places where people want to live, work and invest
Hospitality is a powerhouse that contributes £140 billion in growth, £54 billion in tax receipts and 3.5 million jobs. Our sector is unique in creating places that people want to live, work and invest.
Our summer conference will celebrate hospitality’s contribution to Britain and showcase why it matters more now than ever before.
Hear from the people and businesses leading the way in the sector, provide cutting edge insight into the political and economic landscape, and experience top-class networking opportunities with leading figures in hospitality.
In the midst of a year of political change, our Chief Executive Kate Nicholls will share her vision for the future of hospitality and why the sector is ready to take the lead – creating places where people want to live, work and invest.
Hospitality businesses have experienced first-hand just how challenging the past four years have been economically, but are we beginning to see some signs of positivity in the wider economy that can offer some hope? Leading consultancy KPMG joins us to provide an economic overview and offer their insight into what areas of opportunity there could be for the sector.
This year is a big political year and all eyes in the UK are on the upcoming General Election. It can be difficult to cut through the political noise at this time in the electoral cycle, so a leading politics presenter will give us an overview on what the polls are saying, what policies we should expect to see and how businesses should prepare for a potential change of Government.
Hospitality is central to our communities. It creates places where people can meet, work and socialise. But it’s also one of the key sectors that helps regenerate and revive villages, towns and cities. Our panel dives into hospitality-led regeneration projects, how our sector builds communities and practically how that happens, through engagement with the community and local councils.
We are joined by a senior politician to share their view on how hospitality can contribute to the success of the UK in the coming years, and what hospitality needs in return.
The view from a leading CEO of how the industry is faring, their ambitions for the future and how we can invest in our businesses, communities and people.
Good Hotel is a social business on a mission. The team believes that their hotels should have a positive impact on the communities they are in, and they do this through reinvesting profits into training local people to give them jobs in hospitality and educating children. Hear about how Good Hotel was founded and the journey the team has taken to become the successful social business it is today.
In 2015, Good Hotel set up the Good Training Program, a bespoke hospitality course. In this session we will also find out about how this differs from other hospitality training courses and hear first-hand about one trainee’s experience.
Hospitality employs more people under 24 than any other sector. Here we will further hear from the experience of a young person on how hospitality can attract, retain and develop the generation entering the workforce today.
The Macallan Whiskey have made a significant investment in their speyside distillery to expand their whiskeymaking capacity and create a world class tourist venue. This May they will welcome Cirque Du Soleil for a unique residency. In this session we hear from Stuart Cassells, General Manager of The Macallan Estate about how they managed the investment and the lessons for other hospitality businesses looking to expand.
Hospitality is often said to be the sector most responsive to investment, and is expected to grow by 6% a year. What are the trends in the investment market for the sector today? How accessible is finance? What are investors looking for from businesses? How can businesses make themselves investable?

Matt Grech-Smith
Co-founder & co-CEO, Swingers
Following a pre-university gap year stint as an officer in the British Army, Matt attended the University of Manchester to study political science. Finding the college schedule a little relaxed after such an active year out, he spotted an opportunity to practice his entrepreneurial skills alongside his studies and started organising club nights for his fellow college students. As the business grew to other college cities, Matt met Jeremy Simmonds, who was at the University of Leeds. They became business partners (started a partnership that has lasted over 20 years) and launched Rough Hill, a business that by 2010 had grown to over 15 UK cities, running up to 25 events per week and selling tickets to a million college students a year.
Rough Hill was built on highly organised college student networks in each city, who sold the event tickets to their peers. Before long Rough Hill was helping brands to reach the college demographic through their grass roots marketing channel, and this brought them to the attention of Chime Plc, who in 2012 acquired the business and placed it into VCCP, the international advertising agency. There Matt and Jeremy continued to run their core business as well as taking on youth and experiential marketing contracts for the agency clients, working for blue chip brands such as Telefonica, McDonalds, Coca-Cola and McLaren.
In 2014, Matt and Jeremy completed their earn-out at VCCP and with their unique perspective of both the nightlife and experiential industries, they formed Competitive Socialising. They tested their concept ‘Swingers – the crazy golf club’ with a pop-up in east London that ran from September 2014 to February 2015. It was an instant, viral success and sold out in days, convincing them that the concept had enormous potential.
The first permanent Swingers location followed in 2016 in London’s Financial District and again it was a runaway success, offering mini golf, cocktails and street food in a totally original and unique environment. A second location followed in London’s West End in 2018. In 2019 plans for international expansion got underway but were temporarily halted in 2020 when the world shut down. Fortunately guests rushed back to Swingers venues whenever the venues reopened and in June 2021 the first Swingers venue in the US opened its doors in Washington, DC. A second US venue followed in 2022 in Manhattan, New York. In late 2024 Swingers will open its flagship venue at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas as well as a venue on Bluewaters Island in Dubai.
Swingers has been backed by Cain International since 2018, joined by a number of other family offices and institutional investors in 2023. In 2024 the business expects to turnover in excess of US$70m globally, still led by Matt and Jeremy as co-CEOs.
