UKHospitality has been named a sector Vanguard, as part of the Government's Keep Britain Working Review, and hospitality businesses are encouraged to get involved to help shape the future of workplace health reform.
The review, led by Sir Charlie Mayfield, aims to tackle rising ill-health that is keeping people out of work.
It wants to drive action to prevent ill-health, support people to stay in work, and help employers build healthier, more resilient workplaces.
What is a Vanguard?
Vanguards are early adopters who will develop and refine workplace health approaches over the next three years to build the evidence base for what works.
They will embrace the report’s aim to build a healthy working lifecycle, through reducing sickness absence, improving return-to-work rates, and increasing disability employment rates.
By supporting this programme, we are demonstrating how the hospitality industry can lead the way in creating accessible, inclusive workplaces — offering opportunity, flexibility and meaningful employment to people from all walks of life.
The sector’s participation will highlight its positive social contribution, its role in supporting wellbeing at work, and its ability to provide routes back into employment for those facing health-related barriers.
Why should you get involved?
Members: are you involved in our HR Group, to hear the latest on all workforce, skills and training?

Hospitality businesses are invited to join the Vanguard Phase to join a group of forward-thinking businesses who will test and shape the reforms before they are rolled out nationwide.
They will champion a healthy working lifecycle, provide effective workplace health support, and measure and share anonymised data on absence, return-to-work and disability participation with the new Workplace Health Intelligence Unit (with full confidentiality and voluntary participation).
There are significant benefits for businesses too:
- 1
Shape national workplace health reform and gain recognition as sector leaders in wellbeing and inclusion.
- 2
Receive confidential benchmarking and insights from the Workplace Health Intelligence Unit.
- 3
Access peer learning and early evidence on effective prevention and rehabilitation.
- 4
Join focused projects on issues such as early mental health support, musculoskeletal health and fit note reform.
- 5
Showcase hospitality’s strengths — demonstrating the sector’s commitment to wellbeing, inclusivity and opportunity for all.
- 6
Build a healthier, more productive workforce, improving retention and supporting long-term growth.
