UKHospitality Cymru welcomes ‘open door’ on variable multiplier and other changes to business rates in Wales

UKHospitality Cymru welcomed Welsh Government’s decision today to continue to investigate the provision of greater scope to vary the multiplier, possible alternatives to Business Rates, more frequent revaluation cycles and a review of relief and exemptions.

“We have campaigned for more than 10 years to right the wrongs of the unfair bricks-and-mortar based business rates system which puts such a heavy load on hospitality businesses,” said UKHospitality Cymru Executive Director David Chapman.

“Today’s announcement shows that Welsh Government, in particular the Finance Minister Rebecca Evans, has listened to our repeated asks and our consultation response and opened the door to further discussions on a fairer system.”

He said the other proposed changes, including a commitment to introducing three-yearly revaluations, will help the industry going forward and will allow Government more tools to be able to help the industry rebuild and return to its pre-Covid levels of growth and substantial contributions to the Welsh economy.
