Jeremy Scorer
Licensed Trade Director, HIT Training
Jeremy Scorer
Licensed Trade Director, HIT Training
Born upstairs in The Happy Man pub in Nottingham, Jeremy has spent his entire life in licensed trade. His parents were publicans and so were his grandparents, aunties and uncles. It’s fair to say that public houses run in Jeremy’s blood.
Aged 25, Jeremy – known as Jez - became the youngest tenant to run a pub and during this time, he developed a strong interest in managing and training his own team. In 1998, while managing The Anchor Inn, he set up and ran Charnwood Training Group, a specialist training organisation for the Licensed Retail sector.
“As an operator, I could see the benefits first-hand that quality training had on both staff retention and team morale,” says Jez. “My absolute passion has always been for everyone to see a career in hospitality not just as a job, but as the profession it truly is.”
After 18 years at the helm, Jez sold Charnwood Training Group to a Nottinghamshire college and joined HIT in October 2017. On his fourth day working for HIT, he dressed up as an Arabian genie for the company conference panto. It was his birthday too!
During Jez’s time at HIT, he has been instrumental in building the UK’s first brewer apprenticeship in collaboration with the University of Nottingham’s International Centre for Brewing Science and the Institute of Brewing & Distilling.
Jez is an active member of the British Institute of Innkeeping, Society of Independent Brewers Association and National Pubwatch. He is also a trustee of the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body.
A Nottingham Forest season ticket holder, he once did a 175ft bungee jump in his pub car park.

Workforce and Skills event 2024
The Minister for Employment will discuss the work the Department for Work and Pensions has been undertaking on a range of initiatives to help get people back into work. Hospitality has been pinpointed as a key sector to achieve this, resulting in dedicated schemes being run in partnership with UKHospitality to help bring people back into work, which the Minister will update on.
Jo Churchill MP, Minister for Employment
Leading independent think-tank Resolution Foundation are experts on the labour market and they’ll be sharing their insight on the key factors hospitality businesses need to know to aid their recruitment. With working patterns having changed considerably since the pandemic, you’ll receive the latest updates on how this is impacting businesses and employees.
Gregory Thwaites, Research Director, Resolution Foundation
Hospitality is a crowded marketplace and competition for the best people to work in our venues is fierce. With recruitment a challenge as it is, with businesses continuing to experience shortages, four leading businesses join us to share their secrets to success. They’ll detail how they have been successful in recruiting top talent and, critically, what easy mistakes to avoid.
Franki Hale, People Director, Wells & Co; Rachel Jones, Director of People and Change, Sodexo; Julie Gingell, Managing Director, Docklands Restaurant and Bars, Elite Coffee and Fox Connaught; Brian Trollip, Managing Director, Dishoom
The immigration system has been notoriously challenging for hospitality businesses to navigate but many had just begun to see results in their use of the visa system. The Government’s decision to significantly toughen up the system and make it much more stringent changed all of that. Immigration experts Boyes Turner will tell you all you need to know about the new system.
Chris Harber, Head of Immigration, Boyes Turner
The wellbeing of everyone involved in hospitality has become a huge priority for the sector over recent years and mental health is a critical part of that.
Following a 30-year career in newspapers and magazines, David Beeney opened up about his battle with panic attacks and has dedicated the rest of his career to eradicating the stigma of mental health. He’ll share his experiences, how to build personal resilience and help those around you.
David Beeney, Mental health advocate and founder of Breaking The Silence
As we head towards a General Election and political parties are announcing new policies, it’s clear there would be significant changes to the employment landscape under a potential Labour government. The party has committed to ban zero-hour contracts, for example, so we have enlisted a leading consultancy to take us through what hospitality businesses could expect from a Labour government.
The Hospitality Skills Passport is a revolutionary new tool that can transform how hospitality businesses recruit and this dedicated session will give attendees the first look at the scheme.
Proven to be successful in a pilot scheme run with the Department for Work and Pensions, the passport will widen the pool of candidates available to businesses, reduce training requirements and inspire confidence to applicants.
Be among the first to hear about the new passport and how it can change recruitment for the better.
Kate Nicholls OBE, Chief Executive, UKHospitality
Table facilitation supported by Official Partners
Over the past year, UKHospitality has partnered with the Department for Work and Pensions and hospitality businesses to run pilot schemes across the country that aim to help the economically inactive back into work, through the use of fast-track training and work experience.
The results have been overwhelmingly positive, for both employer and employee, and could pave the way for a permanent scheme that can create a continuous pipeline of people into the sector.
We bring the key participants together to look back at the scheme and how it can be a force for good in the future.
Chris Gamm, Chief Executive, Springboard; Chaired by Sandra Kelly, Skills Director, UKHospitality
As part of our work to make hospitality the career of choice for the younger generation, we are collaborating with HIT Training to facilitate a new degree apprenticeship tailored for the hospitality sector.
Using Apprenticeship Levy funds, the degree apprenticeship could provide a replacement to the traditional university-led graduate scheme and allow employers to take on bright sixth form and college leavers who work with them while they complete their degree.
The sector has already pledged more than 350 places and this session takes you through the fantastic prospects this pathway holds, and will share how you can get involved.
Hospitality still struggles to shift out-dated and incorrect views about the culture of our sector, despite widespread changes to working practices, employee wellbeing and training and development.
Businesses across the sector have worked hard, and continue to do so, to make positive change to hospitality’s culture. We’ll hear from three employers leading the way in this space and share how it has been invaluable for their businesses.
Jody Bennett, HR Director, Brewhouse & Kitchen; Shannon Rocky, People Director, Limewood; Tanya Wicks, Director of Legal Compliance and Operational Development, Barons Pub Company; Chaired by Fleet Street
